kellaproducts
Just getting everything finished now for the exhibition and getting ready to launch kellaproducts with year 7/8 at Kellerberrin high school. The bags are being stitched with the shopping list and last bits of embroidery done in preparation. The bags will be for sale to raise money for the Royal Flying Dcotors service ..
The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia is a not-for-profit charitable Service providing aeromedical emergency and primary health care services together with communication and education assistance to people who live, work and travel in regional and remote Australia.
alot of art projects involve the community making work but nothing goes back to the people involved so this seems like a good way to finish the project as i have met some great people who made me feel very welcome here.. It has been a great residency but i am tired and ready for home. I am looking forward to seeing good friends and also to have a break and not think about art for a while and of course get a social lifeback! .

mission statement
kellaproducts aims to provide quality local products while respecting the environment, acquiring materials locally, and using water efficient technologies. recycle, make do and mend is our motto

salty shoes project

'The project is part of IASKA’s wider program exploring the relationship between natural and human living environments in rural Australia and sustainable ecosystems.

‘Salt shoes’ engages the principles of recycling, make-do and mending. The students 'make something useful from useless materials’ and modify commonly found shoes for use in the salt fields. The shoes will be modified through the addition of what is generally considered rubbish in our throw away society. Students will work as product designers and be encouraged to come up with ingenious methods to create usable, functional shoes that will assist land users- they may range from farmers, community members, environmental researchers to international tourists- to more easily navigate the terrain. The concept of ecological footprints will also be discussed.,
golf shoes, footie shoes, slippers, high heels will be modified for the landscape of Kellerberrin district ...using recycled materials, tyres , plastics etc

saving for a 'not so rainy' day

'Rainwater tanks, traditionally an icon of the Australian outback, are becoming a more common feature in urban communities, with around 17% of all households installing a tank on their property. More households need to purchase a rainwater tank if the community is to make a real difference to conserve rapidly depleting water supplies.

Why use rainwater?

Using rainwater can reduce your water bills as rainwater is free. Tank rebate schemes are available in many states.
Collecting rainwater allows you to be prepared for times of low rainfall, so you can still maintain your garden, especially if there are water restrictions in your area.
It reduces the load on stormwater systems because roof runoff is not flushed into the drains.
Using rainwater reduces the need to build more water storage dams, which may have to be situated in environmentally sensitive areas.

I have been working with the rain i have collected and been storing it in jars i have collected from the community.

http://www.wheatbelttourism.com/en/Wildflowers/Current+Wildflower+Season/default.htm

Cliff Humfries resepcted aborigine raised in kellerberrin district.
'interviewd at the age of 74 he said there wwere some things he missed about the past . He said he would like a reserve that had been set aside for wildflowers returned to the aborigines so that they could choose between living in town or in the bush: if a little cottage was put out on the reserve i'd be very pleased to live in it . Id stay out and make a homein the bush where i once belonged - go back to what we used to do in the early days'

i think the noise of traffic here is finally getting to me so I am embroidering native flowers on ear plugs for the community to block out the sound of trucks and trains passing through .. and bringing back a bit of nature to the town .

shopping list
embroidered onto a shopping bag
'Governments are currently working in conjunction with retailers to phase-out single-use plastic bags by the end of 2008.
If you don't have plastic bag alternatives reusable bags such as calico and green bags ready to go in your store by this date, you'll be left behind.
By acting now, you'll have plenty of time to explore the alternatives, choose either paper, calico or green bags the right one for your business, cut your plastic bag costs and start marketing your actions to your customers and the media.
Reusable bags are emerging as the smart alternative. They offer affordable practicality, plus the satisfaction that comes from making environmentally responsible choices.'

'farmers wanted for sewing group'

I may revive an old tradition of sewing wheat bags and encourage farmers to join my sewing group to sew some rain .. i can imagine it will be as popular as my plan to get fishermen to knit fish when on a residency in the outer hebrides ..
i might just advertise it anyway in the local mag for a laugh..apparently it was a terrible job and they all hated it
